Gutenberg is the newest WordPress editor as a replacement for WYSIWYG or classic editor that WordPress uses for years. The concept of Gutenberg is a page builder editor which gives us the freedom to create various post layouts.
For example, in the old editor, we need a 3rd party plugin to create a two columns layout in our post, but with Gutenberg you can create it super easy with just a couple of clicks. And the best part is, you can do a drag-n-drop this section (known as block) to the editor.
But, if you are not ready for it, then you may get some trouble to adapting with Gutenberg.
Gutenberg Pros & Cons #
The development of Gutenberg has been started since around 2017, but it was officially introduced in WordPress version 5.0, in December 2018. Since the first time WordPress core team introduced Gutenberg, there was a lot of negative feedbacks either from users and developers.
According to users' feedback, Gutenberg was not user-friendly, meanwhile, according to the developers, it was not easy to integrate Gutenberg with their plugins or themes.
Are you one of them? Relax, deactivating Gutenberg is quite easy.
How To Disable Gutenberg #
There are 3 ways to disable Gutenberg, 2 of them are using plugins, and the other one is to add one line of code to your theme's
You need to know that this method, disable Gutenberg is only temporary because there is a chance one day WordPress will remove the old editor completely and replaced it with Gutenberg permanently. In 2018, they already announced that the old editor will be only supported until December 31, 2021!
So, I suggest you start to get used to using Gutenberg. But if you are not ready yet, you can try one of the methods below to disable Gutenberg.
1. Install Classic Editor Plugin #
This plugin was made by the WordPress core team itself, to restore the editor to the old editor. If you check the official page for this plugin, you can see that it is used by more than 5 million WordPress websites!
This indicates that there are still many WordPress users who are still not ready to use Gutenberg.
To install this plugin, you can hover to the Plugins menu then click the Add new menu. Type Classic Editor in the search form, then click Install Now then Activate the plugin.
This plugin has a setting to switch between the old editor and Gutenberg with just one click. Please go to Settings > Writting, please take a look at the image below.
In the first option, you can choose which editor is the default editor, and the second option is you can allow you or your users/editor to switch between Classic and Gutenberg editor.
This plugin is perfect for those of you who are still not ready to use Gutenberg yet but also want to start adapting to this new editor.
2. Install Disable Gutenberg Plugin #
This plugin is a plugin made by an independent WordPress developer named Jeff Star. It is used by more than 600k WordPress websites around the world.
This plugin is the easiest and efficient than the Classic Editor plugin. You just need to install and activate the plugin, the Classic editor will automatically be replaced by Gutenberg. No settings needed!
To install it, go to Plugins > Add New, type 'Disable Gutenberg' in the search form, then click Install Now then Activate the plugin. The classic editor is now replaced by Gutenberg automatically.
3. How To Disable Gutenberg Using Code #
Last but not least, if you don't want to install more plugins to your WordPress website, you can add 1 line of code to your active theme's
functions.php file. However, it is safer if you use a child theme.
Please add the code below
add_filter('use_block_editor_for_post', '__return_false', 10);
In my opinion, Gutenberg is a very comfortable editor for writing. There is no distraction here and there, just focus on the editor. Other than that, several block features really help me to create attractive content, such as a gallery, columns, etc.
Also, I would like to remind you that you also need to use a theme that supports Gutenberg, so you can use every Gutenberg feature. You can check and read the theme description before you download or purchase it.
One more reminder is, disable Gutenberg is only a temporary solution. Because there is a chance, the classic editor will be removed permanently in the future. So, I'd suggest you start learning, adapting to Gutenberg as soon as possible.
